More and more restaurants in Cape Town, South Africa, are being forced to innovate in the face of a global economic recession, an intriguing article in the Cape Cod Times has recently announced. This is wonderful news for tourists and locals who love to dine out.

Restaurants across the Cape and across the country are looking for creative ways to bring customers in with experiences that go beyond eating dinner.

The National Restaurant Association estimates that $1.5 billion will be spent in restaurants on any given day this year, adding up to $566 billion in sales.

Wine expert Wendy Koder, from Cotuit Liquors and www.uncorkedonline.com, has been arranging "Sip & Saute" cooking demonstrations with wine pairings at various restaurants. Earlier this month, chef Sara Alessio at Osteria La Civetta in Falmouth taught customers to make tortelloni (bigger than tortellini). The lesson, samples and wines were $35 per person. Regatta of Cotuit chef-owner Weldon Fizzell is offering cooking classes for eight people, at $75 apiece, every other Saturday through June.

Although wine-pairing dinners have long been in vogue, restaurants are now branching out.

At the suggestion of a longtime patron, the Barnstable Restaurant and Tavern recently held a scotch dinner. Chef-owner Bob Calderone adapted recipes from "The Whisky Kitchen" and paired them with a series of single-malt scotches.

Siena in Mashpee Commons has regularly hosted events such as cooking fish caught by guests or selling the opportunity to be prep cook for a day. But owner and self-described host Graham Silliman says his restaurant has traded special events for a more one-on-one approach to providing a great dining experience to each of the 200 people who show up on a Saturday night.

I think it's about time that restaurant dining was livened up. Eating out should be about enjoying an experience, not simply fulfilling one’s nutritional needs and tipping a broke student.

Revolution in Restaurant-world. Is it just the economy or is it the restaurant hype on TV as well? I wonder. All these restaurant-reality shows (think Gordon Ramsay) must have something to do with the revolution going on in the world's second oldest industry.

I agree, food needs to be enjoyed and so many time people just go out eat and really don't savour their food. There are so many amazing restaurants in Cape Town offering delicious meals. Next time you are out eating, take the time to savour the flavours and really enjoy your dish.
